Stitched with Care: A Special St John Commission
Every now and then, a custom request comes across my desk that feels extra special. This week, it was all about a very important vehicle that represents help, hope, and heart in our community: The St John Ambulance.
A Gift with a Story
A few years ago, I worked at St John during the COVID shutdown in my country. I made a friend there who asked me to make him a fire engine. I made that and then he asked me to make a St John Ambulance. I finished up working at St John and went back to my original employer that I’d worked for as a flight attendant. So we lost touch. That was about 3 years ago. And then only a few weeks ago, I received a message from him asking if I was still able to make the fire engine that we had discussed. So I’ve now finished the ambulance and reconnected with him - a win-win situation, I’d say! :) For him, the ambulance is no. 2 of the 3 work vehicles that he’s driven throughout his adult career. He’s now asked me to make an army truck which I’m excited about starting also.
When I was asked to create a crocheted version of this iconic vehicle, I knew it had to be more than just a toy. It needed to be a "Cuddly" that felt meaningful and made to be treasured. Whether it’s a gift for a hardworking frontline hero, a brave little one who’s had a ride in the real thing, or a retired officer keeping memories close, there is something so nostalgic about seeing such a familiar sight turned into a soft, handcrafted keepsake.
I spent hours getting the details just right—from the signature stripes to that unmistakable St John green—ensuring every stitch felt like a tribute to the incredible work they do.
From My Hook to Yours
While I loved bringing this specific finished piece to life, I also wanted to make sure other makers could share in the magic.
As I worked on the custom order, I carefully documented every step to create a brand-new crochet pattern. My goal was to make this project feel achievable, even if you’re relatively new to amigurumi. I’ve broken down the shapes and color changes so you can create your own heartfelt gift for the heroes in your life.
Made to be Treasured
Whether you’re looking to commission a finished vehicle or you’re ready to pick up your hook and follow the pattern, I hope this little ambulance brings a bit of handmade joy to your home.
