This Week’s Make: The Daydreamers Band

The Daydreamers Band

Every now and then, a project lands on my hook that feels like a little celebration — a burst of colour, character, and pure creative joy. This week, that honour goes to The Daydreamers Band, my bright, whimsical quartet inspired by the playful, imaginative art styles of the late 60s.

I don’t often get asked to make the entire band in one go. They’re a bit of an investment by my customers so the least I can do is put a lot of heart into each doll. When someone does request the full set, it feels like a reunion — all four personalities coming together again, side by side, ready to bring a little magic into the world.

There’s something special about seeing them as a group. Individually, each Daydreamer has their own charm — their expressive faces, their bold outfits, their wonderfully quirky hairstyles that nod to that iconic late‑60s era. But together? They look like they’ve just stepped out of a technicolour dreamscape, ready to burst into song.

This particular band is heading off on a long journey to their new home in Yankton, South Dakota. I love imagining them travelling together, tucked safely in their parcel, bringing a little piece of musical handmade joy across the world. It always amazes me how yarn, a hook, and a bit of imagination can connect people from such different corners of the globe.

And let’s talk about colour — because The Daydreamers are full of it. These four soak up more shades than almost any other make I do. Sunshine yellows, deep purples, ocean blues, warm reds… my crochet nook looks like a rainbow exploded by the time I’m done. Their hairstyles alone are a whole adventure — sculptural, expressive, and unmistakably retro.

Projects like this remind me why I love what I do. They’re playful, nostalgic, and full of personality. They take time, patience, and a whole lot of colour changes, but the end result is always worth it. Seeing them all lined up together before they head off to their new home is one of those quiet maker moments that fills me with pride.

Here’s to The Daydreamers — to their colour, their charm, and their little reunion on my work couch this week. I hope their new family in South Dakota loves them as much as I loved bringing them to life.

Cheers

Esma
