Awkward Monkey - King of the Side Eye
Hand Crocheted Awkward Monkey
Some makes just make me smile before I’ve even picked up my hook, and Awkward Monkey is absolutely one of them. When I was first asked to make him back in 2021, I actually had to look him up — I’d heard of the meme, of course, but didn’t know much about him beyond that iconic expression. One quick search later and I thought, “Ohhh… that guy.” And the rest is history.
Since then, I’ve made him 11 times, and he’s become one of those characters I genuinely look forward to revisiting. He’s a cute, compact size — quick to whip up, easy to handle, and always full of personality. Over time, I’ve even developed a full crochet pattern for him, and it’s been such a joy seeing other makers bring their own versions to life.
But the real magic of Awkward Monkey is in his expression. That deadpan look. That famous side‑eye. That “I’m saying nothing, but also saying everything” vibe. I’ve learned that it’s all in the placement of the eyes and mouth — a millimetre too high or too wide and he becomes a completely different character. When the expression lands just right, though, he becomes instantly recognisable and irresistibly funny.
I think that’s why I enjoy making him so much. There’s a little bit of Awkward Monkey in all of us — that moment where you’re silently observing the chaos, or trying to stay neutral while your face betrays you. Honestly, I see a lot of myself in him. That look that says a million words without saying a thing.
This week’s Awkward Monkey turned out beautifully — soft, expressive, and full of that quiet comedic charm that makes him such a favourite. He’s one of those makes that reminds me why I love what I do: simple, joyful, and stitched with personality.
Here’s to Awkward Monkey — the king of side‑eye, the master of deadpan, and one of the most unexpectedly relatable little characters to ever come off my hook.
Cheers
