This Week’s Make: Mother & Baby Turtle Set
Some makes feel like they’re stitched with a little extra love, and this week’s Mother & Baby Turtle Set was exactly that. A dear friend welcomed a new baby into the family, and I instantly knew this sweet little duo would make the perfect gift — a gentle, symbolic reminder of connection, comfort, and the quiet magic of those early days of bonding.
I’ve made this set a few times over the years, and every time I return to it, I’m reminded why people adore it so much. The watermelon colouring adds such a playful twist to a classic turtle design — soft greens, rosy pinks, and those cheerful little shells that look like they’ve rolled straight out of a summer picnic. It’s a fun, whimsical variation that always brings a smile.
And yet, every time I make them, I find myself dreaming up other fruity possibilities. Imagine a kiwifruit turtle with a speckled shell, or a lemon turtle in bright sunshine yellow, or even a pineapple turtle with a textured golden shell. They’d all be so, so cute. But funnily enough, everyone always asks for the watermelon pair — they’ve become the unofficial fan favourite.
One of the things I love most about this set is how child‑friendly it is. There are no small parts, no choking hazards — just soft, cuddly shapes perfect for little hands to hold, squeeze, and carry around on tiny adventures. They’re the kind of companions that quietly become part of childhood memories.
This time around, I also spent a bit more time refining their little faces. I’ve been experimenting with ways to define the eyes and mouth more clearly, giving each turtle a bit more personality and expression. I’m always learning, always tweaking, always trying to make my cuddlies just a little bit better than the last time. That’s the joy of handmade — every piece teaches me something new.
Seeing this mother and baby pair come together felt especially sweet. A tiny family, stitched with love, ready to head off to their new home and become part of someone else’s story. I hope they bring comfort, joy, and a little splash of watermelon whimsy to the newest member of the family.
Here’s to soft moments, sweet makes, and the magic of handmade gifts that carry meaning far beyond their stitches.
Cheers
