Oscar the Octopus

Oscar the Octopus

Some makes feel like catching up with an old friend, and this week’s focus — Oscar the Octopus — was exactly that. I’ve made this sweet eight‑legged character a few times now, each one in three different colour combinations, and every version has had its own personality stitched into it. My secret hope is always that someone will request him in a brand‑new colour combo one day… just to keep things interesting and let Oscar show off a whole new vibe.

Even though Oscar technically has eight legs, when I’m crocheting them it feels more like 108. There’s something about repetitive limb‑making that makes time stretch in the funniest way — but once they’re all attached and he’s sitting there looking adorable, it’s always worth it.

Oscar is possibly one of the biggest crochet projects in my KiwiCuddlies collection. He’s substantial, cuddly, and wonderfully squishy — the kind of make that feels like a proper companion rather than just a toy. Despite his size, he’s actually fairly simple to make. The pattern is repetitive, soothing, and perfect for settling into a rhythm. It’s one of those projects where you can pop on a cosy show, sip a warm drink, and just stitch away.

Oscar continues to be one of those makes that feels both nostalgic and joyful. Soft, expressive, and full of charm — a gentle reminder that even the biggest projects can be simple, soothing, and full of heart.

Here’s to Oscar — eight legs, endless personality, and always a delight to bring to life.

Cheers,

Esma
