Throwback to the 90s - Foot Bags!

This week’s make took me right back to the 90s — that era of bright colours, after‑school hangs, and little toys that somehow kept us entertained for hours. I’ve been noticing these little foot bags making a comeback lately, so I thought it was finally time to design my own KiwiCuddlies version. And honestly, they were so much fun to create.

I made three themed sets: fruit, nature, and mood — each one with its own personality and colour story. They’re small, playful, and wonderfully customisable. If you’re using the crochet pattern, you can treat it as a jumping‑off point to design your own unique bags. I love that about them — they’re tiny canvases for creativity.

This was my first time making foot bags, and I can absolutely see why they’re having a moment again. They’re quick to whip up, easy to personalise, and just the right size for little hands (or nostalgic grown‑up hands). And because I have zero coordination when it comes to sports, I’ll happily stick to crocheting them rather than trying to use them. Some of us are meant for yarn, not athleticism.

Each bag is filled with rice inside a balloon, giving it that perfect soft weight and squish. It’s simple, safe, and gives them that classic feel without needing any fancy materials.

What I love most is how expressive they can be. The mood set especially made me smile — tiny little faces that say everything without saying a word. It’s amazing how much personality you can stitch into something so small.

Both the pattern and the finished sets are now available on my website, and I’m already dreaming up more themes. Maybe a retro set? A beachy set? A Kiwi wildlife set? The possibilities are endless.

Here’s to small makes, big nostalgia, and the joy of bringing a little 90s magic back to life — one tiny foot bag at a time.

Cheers
