Year of the Fire Horse
Fire Horse
Every so often, a new character gallops onto my hook with a spark of energy that feels completely fresh — and this week, that honour goes to my Hand Crocheted Fire Horse. With 2026 being the Year of the Horse, and specifically the Year of the Fire Horse in the Chinese zodiac, it felt like the perfect time to bring a little flame‑kissed magic into the KiwiCuddlies repertoire.
This was my first time making a Fire Horse, and the idea came from wanting to try something I hadn’t made before — something symbolic, something bold, something that carried a bit of meaning stitched into its shape. I started by gathering inspiration, and as always, I found myself drawn to simple Scandinavian‑style linework. Clean shapes, gentle curves, minimal fuss. I love how simplicity leaves room for imagination.
But of course, a Fire Horse needs colour — and lots of it. I adore the energy that comes from bold, warm shades. Reds, oranges, yellows… they bring such life to a piece. This little horse feels like it’s glowing from the inside out, full of movement and personality even while standing still.
When I was deciding on the size, I knew I wanted something small enough for little hands to carry around, but still big enough to feel expressive and special. At 21 cm (8.2 inches) tall, this Fire Horse is the perfect companion size — easy to hold, easy to display, and full of charm.
There’s something magical about creating a piece that ties into a moment in time. The Year of the Fire Horse only comes around every 60 years, and it’s known for its vibrant, passionate, unstoppable energy. Stitching that symbolism into a soft, cuddly form felt like a beautiful way to honour it — a tiny keepsake for a very special year.
I have a feeling this won’t be the last Fire Horse to trot off my hook. There’s something about this design — the simplicity, the colour, the meaning — that makes it feel like the start of a new KiwiCuddlies favourite.
Here’s to bold colours, new beginnings, and handmade magic woven into one stitch at a time.
Cheers
